A Guide to Wine Cellars

By: Andre Beudein

Business Wine collecting is becoming quite the popular hobby. Those who can afford it have taken a strong liking to not only tasting great wines, but creating a collection of some of their favorites as well. Drinking wine was once only done by royalty, but these days all kinds of Americans are pouring themselves a glass of their favorite red or white. But do you do when your bottle collection starts growing out of control?

Collecting wine can take up a lot of space. Imagine a collection of more than 600 bottles of vintage wine. As your collection grows, small glass-fronted refrigerator units won't provide enough storage. If you have a sizeable quantity of vintage wines, you will require a larger storage area. The options when it comes to wine cellars are nearly endless, including some that use fine woods such as mahogany or premium redwood.

Installing a wine cellar in your home will allow you to handle your wine assets quite nicely. Wine cellars are now being installed in many high-end homes, and these cellars can maintain a constant temperature of between 50 and 60 degrees and include racks or shelving appropriate for storage. Some of the points that will need to be considered for a storage room or cellar are temperature and humidity control, the duration of the storage of your wines, measures taken for security, and whether you would be moving away at any time in the near future.

Wine rooms or cellars can be installed during the building process and can range in style from glass fronted rooms to coves with faux rock walls resembling caves. Maybe you have a room in your home you want to turn into a wine room. It can be fitted with special temperature controls and customized shelving so your wines stay protected and preserved.

You could also have your wine cellar built by a specialized company that will come in and do the job for you. If you do it this way, the result will be amazing, but expensive. Do-it-yourself kits are also available if you prefer not to hire a contractor. Personal wine cellars, no matter how they are installed, appeal to the luxury real estate market.

Wine cellars could be the deciding factor to those people looking to purchase luxury homes. It is always an advantage to have one in your home. A mature couple I once knew was looking for a home near their place of business. After looking at many up-scale homes in their area, they selected the home with the temperature-controlled wine room.

For wine connoisseurs who prefer to have their collections near them, there are few restrictions in storage as long as money and space is no object.

Andre Beudein, a wine collector for over twenty years, began to look for Santa Clarita Valley real estate. He realized how many homes were built without a good understanding of fine wine storage. After purchasing Valencia new homes, as the first step, he converted the basement into a wine cellar. Now, he has a place to store his favorite pastime.
